Qualification Recognition: Working in an Irish Crèche
To work directly with children in an Irish crèche, you need at least a QQI Level 5 qualification in early childhood care and education, or a qualification recognised as equivalent. If you trained outside Ireland, here’s how to check yours.
Step 1: Check the official list. The Irish Government publishes a list of Early Years Recognised Qualifications on gov.ie, including qualifications from many EU countries. If your qualification is on the list, you don’t need to apply for recognition.
Step 2: If it’s not on the list, apply for recognition. You can apply online through gov.ie (search ‘Recognition of an Early Years Qualification’). You’ll usually need copies of your qualification, your transcript showing the subjects you studied, and evidence that your course included a supervised work placement in an early years setting. Translations may be needed for documents not in English.
Step 3: Keep your recognition letter safe. Crèches will ask to see it, and it shows which roles you’re qualified for, for example as an educator or as a room leader.
Tip: Recognition can take time, so apply as early as you can, ideally before you move.
Once your qualification is recognised, upload the letter to your Crèche Staff profile to be verified and included in our weekly shortlist to crèches.
