Moving to Ireland: Your First Steps

Moving to Ireland to work in a crèche is exciting, but there are a few practical things to sort out early. Here’s what most educators need in their first weeks.

1. Get your PPS number. Your Personal Public Service (PPS) number is your tax and social welfare number, and your employer needs it to pay you correctly. You can apply through MyWelfare.ie. If you’re still living outside Ireland, you can start the application online. You’ll usually need photo ID and proof of your Irish address, so keep a copy of your rental agreement or a letter addressed to you.

2. Open a bank account. Your employer will pay your wages into a bank account, ideally one with an Irish or EU IBAN. Online banks are quick to open with just your ID. Traditional Irish banks usually also ask for proof of address.

3. Find somewhere to live. Accommodation in Ireland, especially Dublin and Cork, can be competitive, so start early. Daft.ie is the most popular rental website. Never pay a deposit before you’ve viewed a property, in person or by live video call, and be wary of anyone who refuses to show it. Landlords must register tenancies with the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB).

4. Get ready for Garda vetting. Everyone working with children in Ireland must be Garda vetted. See our Garda vetting guide for what to prepare.

5. Check your qualification. Make sure your childcare qualification is recognised in Ireland before you start. See our qualification recognition guide.
